The Writers Studio

This section of Advanced Online Memoir is open only to students who have taken at least four terms of Memoir and/or by permission of the teacher.

In this six-week video class, students will draw upon the narrative voices they have studied in The Writers Studio's regular memoir classes to begin putting longer pieces together, possibly complete manuscripts. Utilizing Google Meet, class will begin on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at 12 PM CST / 1 PM EST. Weekly exercises will not be given. Rather, students will work with a narrator of their choosing to bring new material to class each week. Students will receive written feedback on weekly, two-page submissions. Longer submissions of up to six pages will be workshopped verbally with each student having a minimum of two opportunities to present work during the course. Over the course of the session, time permitting, we may also have the opportunity to workshop additional, shorter pieces verbally. Suggested (optional) texts include Vivian Gornick's The Situation and the Story, Joan Wickersham's The Suicide Index and Nick Flynn's Another Bullshit Night in Suck City.
