Have you ever wondered how authors craft alternate dimensions and otherworldly characters that parallel, reflect, and critique our society and customs?

This six-week class will focus on the burgeoning genre of Afrofuturism, which centers on cultures of the African diaspora within fantasy and sci-fi narratives set in the future. Through the pioneering poetry and prose of Octavia Butler, Porsha Olayiwola, Tracy K. Smith, and Marlon James, we will explore how these visionary voices utilize specific persona narrators and other essential literary techniques like worldbuilding, mood, and allegory to shape compelling stories and build labyrinthian universes. Together, we will rewrite and reimagine a more inclusive, accessible, and multi-cultural future.

Open to writers of all levels and backgrounds, this class is ideal for individuals interested in experimenting with new styles, expanding their world-building skills, and curious about Black speculative fiction.

"Every week, I presented a new story. Finally something did click, the very thing that’s their specialty at The Writers Studio, emotional content. Before, my work was dead. When I brought in my breakthrough story, I felt I was carrying a weird animal in my bag. It was the first story I sold."
