Interested in experimenting with a hybrid form of writing that knits together a range of forms from poetry and oral history to interviews and more? Join this course on C.D. Wright’s marvelous book-length poem One with Others [A little book of her days].
Described on the book jacket as “A stunning work of investigative journalism and poetry, One with Others draws from oral histories, photographs, newspaper accounts and interviews with witnesses, neighbors, police, activists, and students.” Wright quilts these all together to create a tribute to a remarkable woman against the backdrop of a specific culture, time and place.
Students will read a section of the book before the first class and read subsequent sections each week. (Get your copy early.) Students will share work during class and discuss the week's reading as well as possible exercises. Students will also have the option to pick a new exercise each week or build on an exercise from the prior week.
Since students will be writing their own exercises and preambles for this course, students should be familiar with the Writers Studio method and have taken three Writers Studio classes before this class begins.
