Have you worked in health care, including mental health care, emergency response, nursing, general practice, or any medical specialty? Have you written scientific papers, conference reports, and clinical guidelines, but yearn to write stories or poems from your heart?

This six-week workshop is open to returning Writers Studio students at all levels with a background in health care, interested in writing prose or poetry about medical topics. Students must have taken at least one Writers Studio class previously. The online class features a weekly one-hour Google Meet discussion and written critiques from the teacher and your classmates. We will use the classic Writers Studio technique focused on a persona narrator and examine works by Amy Bloom, William Carlos Williams, John Stone, Susan Sontag, Danielle Ofri, and others. Classes will include time for questions and discussion.

"Every week, I presented a new story. Finally something did click, the very thing that’s their specialty at The Writers Studio, emotional content. Before, my work was dead. When I brought in my breakthrough story, I felt I was carrying a weird animal in my bag. It was the first story I sold."

Jennifer Egan, former Writers Studio student, Winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction
