Prerequisite: At least one term of The Writers Studio Level 1 Intro to Fiction + Poetry or Intro Workshop

Writers yearn to discover emotional truth and to express that truth in their poetry and prose. Yet, they often struggle with material. They feel too close to subjects they love. They avoid challenging subjects. Or they take material for granted and don’t notice material under their noses. In this class, students will learn methods to bring awareness, kindness, and curiosity and insight to their material.

Over six weeks, the class will explore simple meditation practices with a Writers Studio teacher who is also a certified Tergar Anytime Anywhere meditation teacher. After learning a practice, students will apply it during short in-class writing sessions. Between sessions, students can hand that writing to their persona narrators and continue to play and experiment. The classroom will also contain a library of persona-narrator exercises to use, if desired.

The final week, students can bring a short piece or section to read to the class. This is not a requirement, but an invitation. Student writing in all genres—fiction, nonfiction, and poetry—are welcome.
