The Writers Studio

Virtual Intermediate Memoir is open to students who have completed at least four terms of Virtual Memoir.

Using the tried and true Writers Studio method, students will continue to closely examine the work of writers who have been able to turn their personal experiences into memoirs that are transcendentally universal. This class is designed as a bridge between Virtual Memoir and Advanced Memoir, giving students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of narrative technique while developing greater confidence in their own material.

The structure of Virtual Intermediate Memoir allows students both to encounter new narrative possibilities and to spend sustained time with a particular technique or story. Through close reading, discussion, and writing practice, students will continue to develop the narrative distance that allows memoirists to connect with the emotional power of their experiences while shaping them into compelling art.

Class Structure & Details

•Format: Weekly, unrecorded live classes via Google Meet

•What to Expect: During the first week, we will discuss four models in depth, examining the narrative techniques used by each author. For the following four weeks, students will write a two-page exercise inspired by one of these models, choosing the order in which they wish to work with them. For the final three weeks, students may revisit a model, revise an earlier exercise, continue developing a piece that emerged during the class, or experiment further with the approach that proved most productive for them.

•Who Can Join: Virtual Intermediate Memoir is open to students who have completed at least four terms of Virtual Memoir.

Students who have taken at least two terms of Intermediate Virtual Memoir are eligible for Virtual Advanced Memoir.
